Half- Awareness

My boyfriend fell asleep while we were lying together, me in his arms, and I managed to slip away without waking him. I was only gone a little while, to turn off the lights and such, when he started thrashing and shouting, and he almost had a nasty fall over the side but I caught him just before he hit the ground and he woke up. He was really upset, and crying so hard he couldn't talk at all for a few minutes. He finally told me he'd had a nightmare that he was in the dark and he could hear me screaming, calling his name and calling for him to help me, and that there were people in the darkness pulling at him and stopping him from saving me, and he was scared because he thought that he'd lost me.

What you said about half-awareness last time has me curious: did he realise that I'd left him, and it caused him to have this nightmare? I've read of something like this before.

Thanks for whatever insight you can share! Awesome page! =) Suzie, 19 from Ireland

Truffles's comment: While you're sleeping, your body is STILL taking in information, smells, sounds, and all senses. He must have felt you slipping away while he was sleeping, and it must have entered his dreams. It is definitely possible to be aware of things surrounding you while you're asleep, it depends on how light of a sleeper you are and how tired you are.

Can Dreams Predict the Future?

OK, so sometimes I will dream something in my sleep, like, somebody will say something and the the next day it will happen. Can dreams predict the future? weezer, 14 from Kentucky, USA

Truffles's comment: I've had those types of dreams too! After doing some research, I found that it is possible to predict some type of events happening while sleeping. While you are sleeping, your brain is organizing everything you have learned, discarding the unimportant stuff (that's all of the details that your senses pick up, that although you might not realize it your brain is recording) and categorizing and filing the important stuff. While doing this, your brain might actually organize so well that you can figure it out in your sleep resulting in those dreams. My current math teacher actually sometimes solves math problems in her sleep (creepy, I know).

Of course, there's always the possibility of something out of this world happening. People always have reports of some type of psychic happenings. There's not too much to report on this, seeing as usually you don't know that you predicted it until it happens. This is why sometimes people have hard time believing dreams that predict the future. It might be possible, it's unknown, but there's always that possibility, always the unknown. I wouldn't be too worried about it, it seems to be common for some people, and as long as it's not affecting you health-wise, you should be OK.

Continuous Nightmares

I keep on having these nightmares and they won't stop coming!!! I dream that my littlest brother and littlest sister have died and they are in red wooded, closed caskets. I am at the wake all by myself, and then I end up at the funeral after some time. Of course the entire time I'm crying. I'm still alone and then I see more caskets, and I realize that my parents and my other brother and sister are in them. I wake up and my pillow is soaked from my tears. Sometimes in the dream, I start in the hospital with my littlest brother and sister, watching their final breath. I have had this nightmare for a while. I have it almost every night. What does this nightmare mean and why does it keep coming back?!?!? DDFG, 15 from New York, USA

Truffles's comment: Dreaming that a loved one dies means that you appreciate their qualities which you lack. I'm not sure what dreaming about your whole family dying could mean. Try searching for what you like about each member, and applying those qualities to yourself. Once you do this, see if these dreams stop. If they don't after a while, come back here with all of the new details and we'll see if we can figure out what's causing them. Think about the events in the days that you have these dreams, and what could cause them. Sometimes it could mean you had a really heavy dinner before bed, who knows? See what you're doing when you get these dreams, and try to fix that.
