Sperm

So, Really, What are the Chances? (Sex Ed 101)

askaquestion, 19 writes...

My boyfriend and I had sex but he pulled out and there was very little sperm. He said that he wasn't done so he put it back in. I was wondering what are the chances I will become pregnant if I am not on the pill and if I was on the pill. Thank you.

Brittany says...

Okay, before I even answer your question I'd just like to state two things. Sperm are the little guys that fertilize the egg. You cannot see them with the naked eye. Semen is everything - the protein, the sperm, and the nutrients. So when you say there was very little sperm, you really mean very little semen.

This "very little" amount of semen may just be what we know as "pre-cum" which can have sperm in it... and can get you pregnant if you're not using any form of birth control. The fact that he put it back in because he wasn't done is what leads me to believe it was some pre-cum you noticed... and you need to be more careful with that.  You didn't say if you were using a condom, so I can't tell you what the chances of you being pregnant are right now, so I'm just going to assume you weren't using one.  If you're not using a condom and his penis is inside you at all, and you're not on the pill - there is a chance you could be pregnant.  If you had been on the pill and regularly taking it, the chance is very slim (less than 1%).

Wet and Dry Hands (Sex Ed 101)

wet/dry hand, 19 writes...

My girlfriend and I had sex but I accidentally touched her vagina outside and inside with my hand (forgetting that I had sperm on it). Could she become pregnant? My hands were somewhat wet and dry at that time. Thank you

Brittany says...

Okay, I'm not sure I'm following how your hands could be wet and dry at the same time, or how you can accidentally touch somebody's vagina inside and out, but anyways... If you have semen on your hands (see this submission for more on the difference between sperm and semen), you can get somebody pregnant.  It only takes one little, tiny, itsy bitsy sperm to wiggle his way up her vagina and into an egg to be fertilized... so if you notice that your hands are wet with semen, be a bit more careful and wash your hands!  Aside from that, if you're a girl and you're having sex with another girl and there is no man in the question, you shouldn't be having semen on your hands, and therefore you shouldn't be worried right now.

A Pregnancy Question (Sex Ed 101)

Lana, 19 writes...

This is a question sort of inspired by misstrinitybetch - She says that she had sex and then got her period the very next day, and that now she's happy because she's not pregnant. I've always thought that it is still possible to be pregnant if you got your period just after you had sex. Am I wrong in this? Great advice, as always!

Brittany says...

Generally speaking, if you get your period after you have sex, you are not pregnant.  And by "generally", I mean a large majority of the time.  The day immediately before your period is a very unlikely time to get pregnant as it is because ovulation usually occurs halfway through a normal 28-day menstrual cycle (day 14).  If the cycle is 30 days, that means ovulation would occur around day 15.  On top of that, sperm has around 24 hours to fertilize an egg, so by getting your period a day later, the egg was probably not fertilized and therefore she's not pregnant.  But as always, there are exceptions, since some women dont' have normal length cycles or they may not ovulation at that time for whatever reason.  Even still, some people get their period for a few months, for whatever reason, and still are unaware that they are pregnant.

Bleeding After Sex (Sex Ed 101)

2468, 18 writes...

Okay last Saturday, I had sex with my boyfriend and I'm on birth control. He shot sperm in me and ever since then I have been bleeding on and off. What does this mean?

Brittany says...

Things we know:  You had sex.  You're on birth control.  Your boyfriend ejaculated inside you.  You've been bleeding since "the incident".
Things we don't know: Is this your period?  When was your last period?  Did your boyfriend use a condom?  Was this rough sex?  Do you take your pill as directed (at the same time every day, never missing a pill, and been on it for more than a month so far?)

I'm not a doctor.  I don't know why you're bleeding.  I don't know a lot of things about you and I can't really answer your question with a solid answer that I have enough faith in.  I can tell you that you could be pregnant, since your boyfriend ejaculating inside you does put you at risk.  Something internally could be torn and that's resulting in blood.  You might just have your period.

Unless you go to a doctor, you'll never know.  I suggest making an appointment to be sure nothing is wrong.

Pregnancy Question #189843993 (Sex Ed 101)

just want to know, 20 writes...

What is the percentage of being pregnant if I finger my gf after I finish but I forgot my hand had touched the sperm? Her stomach is tight-ish and her period should come in a week or two. Might that be a early sign of her being pregnant? She was barfing but I think it was because she was sick. I am not sure. Can you please get back to me soon? Thank you.

Brittany says...

I'm not sure the exact percentage, but obviously there is a chance.  If she's sick and barfing - she's probably sick and barfing.  Wait until her period comes and if she's late, do the responsible thing and go buy a pregnancy test.

Can You Get Pregnant if You…. (Sex Ed 101)

Can you get pregnant from masturbating near or on objects that may have gotten sperm on them?

Brittany says...

With objects that obviously have sperm on them?  Yes.  Near objects that have sperm on them?  I'll go with no - unless you're rubbing your vagina with a sperm infused cloth or something.

Can Sperm Travel Through… (Sex Ed 101)

Tina, 17 writes...

Can sperm travel through any of the following:

Sperm In Lube (Sex Ed 101)

If a guy got sperm in some lube, and then I used it to masturbate a few days later, could I get pregnant?

JamieG says...

Probably not. The length of time that sperm live after ejaculation depends on the environmental conditions - anywhere from a few minutes on a dry surface to five days inside a woman's reproductive tract. However, I find it very unlikely that it would live for several days in lube.

As always, though, if you're really concerned, wait for your period. If it doesn't come (keep in mind that stress can mess with your menstrual cycle as well), take a pregnancy test for your peace of mind.
