Girl in a Coma

                                                                                           Jenn, Nina and Phanie

If you like The Smiths, Morrissey and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs you might want to check out Girl in a Coma! They're an all girl band from San Antonio, Texas who are signed under Joan Jett's label, Blackheart Records. The band consists of two sisters, Phanie (drums) and Nina (vocals/guitar), and a childhood friend, Jenn (bass). Phanie and Nina met during art class in high school when they decided to make a band. When both girls started to look for a vocalist to try out, Nina offered to sing a song she wrote and got into the band when she was barely 12 years old!

Now the girls are touring from coast to coast playing in rock venues and music festivals. They have toured with people like Cyndi Lauper, Joan Jett and Morrissey himself (the band's idol). I got the chance to see them live and I believe they have been the best live preformance I have ever seen. There music is a combination of punk rock with a bit of melodic pop.

This is their video, El Monte, which is a modern love song Nina wrote.

GIAC's song, "Their Cell" has even been featured in Nylons TV starring Mary Kate Olsen!

Phoenix (Music Mania)

Ivette, 19 from Lubbock, Texas writes...

Phoenix

Phoenix consists of Thomas Mars, Deck D'Arcy, Christian Mazzalai and Laurent Brancowitz. The band came from the late 1990s era when bands like Daft Punk and Air were merging from France. A fun fact is that the guitarist of Phoenix, Laurent Brancowitz, left his previous band to join Phoenix. That previous band later became Daft Punk.

Phoenix combines upbeat French pop tunes with a little taste of electronica in their guitar riffs. Although the band has been around since 1996, they have gained some commercial recognition through the Victoria Secret Fashion and a Cadillac SRX 2010 commercial. They also toured the US in late 2009 appearing in Austin City Limits.

Here are some sample of their music:

Here they are in David Letterman's Show playing "1901".

One of my favorite songs, "Too Young".

My other favorite song, "Fences".

If you want to listen to more Phoenix you can visit their website or myspace!

At the Drive-in (Music Mania)

This holiday, I am giving myself a little present and writing about my favorite band of all time, At the Drive-in!

At the Drive-in

At the Drive-in was an El Paso based band from mid to late 1990s found in Texas. ATDI combined fast rock and roll with passionate lyrics in their music. ATDI separated in 2001 when the band was at it's highest (being called the next Nirvana). ATDI went off to become many of great bands in alternative rock like DeFacto, The Mars Volta, Sparta and Sleepercar.

At the Drive-in Members: Paul Hinojos, Tony Hajjar, Jim Ward, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala

Personal insight

As you all know, I am from El Paso so I started to listen to ATDI when I was 8 years old! I have been a fan of them for almost 12 years, despite never having the chance to see them preform live. If you want to know more about ATDI you can visit a website I made dedicated to them, the official atdi.tumblr!

At the Drive-in - One Armed Scissor (Lamaq Version)

Their Music

ATDI - 198d

At the Drive-in is best known for their powerful performances, full of passion and heart-felt mesages. One of my favorite songs, "198d" is dedicated to the drummer's (Tony Hajjar) deceased grandmother who was in a Lebanese grave site called 198d.

ATDI - Napoleon Solo

"Napoleon Solo" is dedicated to the lead singer's friends and ex-band mates who died in a car crash at the age of 17.

ATDI - Pattern Against User

At the Drive-in is best known for their energetic performances especially from the lead singer, Cedric Bixler-Zavala. Although their performances and music is often seen aggressive, the band condoned any kind of mosh pitting or hard core dancing while they played.

This interview sums up the break up of ATDI.

Kristen Stewart Look (Style Files)

An interview of Twilight Series Star, Kristen Stewart with Nylon TV Magazine!

Her Look

Kristen Stewart incorporates this punk-rock and roll look in her outfits. Black and white are an essential color palette, among other dark and neutral colors. You can also find lots of studs in her look!

Nothing yells more punk and rock than skinny jeans. White and black work fine, but you can also incorporate fun colors like yellow, red and bright blue!

A key aspect in this look is hardcore boots and a heavy shoulder-padded jacket. A fun thing to do is incorporate fun tights, like this punk style skeleton leggings.

Where Do I Get This Look?

Cheap Monday Jeans have a large variety of unique and colorful pants, despite being a little expensive it wouldn't hurt to have a pair of them in your closet.

Wet Seal has a great selection of studded shoes and boots for great prices!

Forever21 has great prices on their trendy colorful bags that can add a special touch to your outfit.
