School Girl Archive

Everyone experiences school at some stage in their lives. After all, in the first 25 years of our lives we spend most of it at an education institution!

The time of your life? Pssht!

They say that your schooling years are the best years of your life, but when you're in the thick of it, it doesn't always seem that way. It helps to remember that the good stuff as well as the bad stuff shapes who you are and you'll probably come out stronger at the other end.

Tough stuff in school

I don't know if my school story is unique, but it's definitely been really hectic and dramatic.
In my school, I am not liked. I don't know why, specifically, but it has to do with my intelligence.
I do have friends, and they're the best that you can get, but fifty percent of the sophomores, and twenty percent of the juniors (my class) seem to have issues.
It's really a struggle to not let them get under my skin, but at the same time, it's funny. After a while of people talking smack about you for no reason, it gets funny.
I know that there are other girls out there, like me, who are going through this almost harassment. One thought that always helps:
In twenty years when you're rich and famous, they'll probably end up uneducated, poor, and shining your shoes. Davida, 16 from New York, USA

Anna's comment: I'm not sure if you just wanted to share your story, or if you were asking for advice, or just offering encouragement for those who might be going through the same thing, but for the benefit of other readers, I'll share some advice:

First of all, Davida's story is NOT unique. Many, many teens find it hard to fit in, be accepted and make friends in high school or college. It's definitely not out of the ordinary to "not be liked" as you have put it, Davida.

Davida (and other readers), you've said that the root of this "not liking"-ness is your intelligence - I don't know if people have made fun of you or don't like you because you don't do as well as them, or better than them - but your intelligence is a part of who you are, and you shouldn't feel like you have to be smart in order for people to like you. I'm glad, though, that you do have friends - and this is the important thing. You need to keep surrounding yourself with positive people such as these, and try not to worry about the rest of your class or the other people in your school. As much as they may annoy you and get under your skin, don't let them. Be the bigger person and don't do the same thing back to them. Just rise above it. You'll be stronger because of it.

A lot of people feel like an outcast while they are in high school. But rest in the fact that circumstances will change. You will go off to uni or college, perhaps even get a part time job, or move to a new area. With these new circumstances, there will be new groups of people to get to know!

If Davida's story seems familiar to you, let me urge you to seek help ASAP.

Try and talk to someone - your mum or dad, older sister, your favourite teacher or your school counsellor - they can help you to either seek more help and support you while you do so, or give you strategies that you can try to help ease the situation.

These websites also have helpful information about bullying and other difficulties that you may experience during school:

Hiya Anna! I really liked last week's update because it gave me loads of ideas on the topics I should research for my 4000 word Extended Essay I'll have to write next year for the IB. Thanks! Chocoholic, 15 from Singapore

Anna's comment: No worries! I'm glad the ideas helped!

NEXT TIME ON SCHOOL GIRL...

I have an idea for a theme-- the craziest teacher you've ever had! Like I had a teacher who had us do meditation in class, but I'm sure other people have way crazier stories. Molly, 14 from California, USA

Anna's comment: Hey Molly, thanks for your suggestion!!

Well, come on everyone, what are you waiting for?! Send in your stories about your craziest teachers!! I'm looking forward to LOTS of submissions next week!
