"Sen. Barack Obama claimed the Democratic nomination for president in a speech in Minnesota tonight -- an historic achievement that for the first time will place an African American at the top of a major political party's ticket.

He referred to the former first lady as "a leader who inspires millions of Americans with her strength, her courage and her commitment to the causes that brought us here tonight." Obama wasn't done. "Our party and our country are better off because of her, and I am a better candidate for having the honor to compete with Hillary Rodham Clinton," he said."

Hillary's View

Want to hear what Hillary Clinton had to say? The following is just one small quote from her speech, and you can find the full text of it here.

"And looking out at you today, I have never felt so blessed. The challenges that I have faced in this campaign are nothing compared to those that millions of Americans face every day in their own lives. So today, I’m going to count my blessings and keep on going. I’m going to keep doing what I was doing long before the cameras ever showed up and what I’ll be doing long after they’re gone: Working to give every American the same opportunities I had, and working to ensure that every child has the chance to grow up and achieve his or her God-given potential."

More On Burma

The political crisis in Burma is perhaps the most fragile issue in the world. The current domestic state of Burma is completely unstable, and the nation is notorious for the worst human rights abuses in the 21st century. In Burma, Political parties have been banned public gatherings limited, the press monitored, traffic has become regulated, citizens are denied the right to technology, and human trafficking as well as prostitution and forced labor have become a key part of the Burmese economy.

Burma is also a very diverse country and because of this diversity there is rampant racism, which results in high death tolls. Scholars, Teachers, Monks, and peaceful protesters are often jailed and abused in Burma. This crisis Burma extends to other nations who continue to engage in trade with the country and all funds the military junta receives goes to weaponry and other militia use. This junta also refuses to allow negotiators, the UN, NGO's (nonprofit organizations) and other peace keepers into the country. This issue is extremely hard to fix when the country is not open to negotiation, technology, news, or any other fundamentals to making progress. The only way to fix this crisis is to force the change by boycotting businesses and products that invest in and trade with Burma, but then the moral issue arises about the recent Cyclones in Burma and providing aide.

However, it's hard to say if the citizens would even receive this aide, it's possible the government would keep the funds for their own purposes. The crisis in Burma needs to be carefully dealt with or else we face the risk of genocide and war. Heather, 16 from
