Get Your Vocal Chords Ready!
Forget about the many Idol incarnations across the globe! And forget about karaoke nights at the local bar! Forget about the Singing With The Stars type programs too! Because there is one game that blows all those well out of the water!
That game?
Singstar of course!
I swear on my life that you will be a convert as soon as you try it. I was so apprehensive when my friend suggested it (in the "I don't/can't sing!" sort of way), but she made me and I'm quite addicted to it now! You definitely don't have to sing impeccably well (I shudder at the thought of listening to myself sing, lol), all you have to do is hit the note that the singer does. The really fun part is getting to sing along to some of your favourite songs while watching the video clips and trying to hit the right notes! Just like karaoke, you get the words along the bottom of the screen too.
There's a few different modes... you can Sing Solo if you've got no one else to play with (or if you're the shy type who wants to belt out the tunes but not in front of anyone!). Or you can play in Party mode where there are three sub-modes. Pass The Mic, which is for groups (and there are different rounds), Battle Mode, which is for two players to go head-to-head, and Duets, which is for two people singing for a joint score. Or for a no-pressure deal, there's the Freestyle mode, which has no scoring. You can also check out the high score charts and alter the game options. And each mode has three difficulty levels - easy, medium and hard. You might think you deserve the highest praise from Simon Cowell for a song on easy, but think again! To sing the same song on medium or difficult is so much harder! And believe me, I've tried! And you may think you know how to sing a song, but you can be really surprised when you find you can't actually hit the note properly.
There's loads of different games for Singstar, with each being in a certain category. You can sing Rock, Pop, Pop Hits, R&B, sing songs from the 80s and 90s, pretend you're a up on stage and belt out Rock Anthems or Rock Ballads or sing along with the Legends. Or party like it's 1999 with Party. And then there's the original Singstar! Sometimes you'll find a bundle that includes the two mics, all the connections, plus a game, but more often than not you'll have to buy the kit separately. But the microphones are real, not some kind of toy-like thing, and you do get everything you need to hook them up to your Playstation.
If you have a Playstation 3, then Singstar can have any song you choose! There's an online store chock full of all those songs you love, so you don't need to worry about buying the games that may only have one or two songs you actually want to sing, you can buy whatever you want!
The other really neat thing about this game is that you can hook up your EyeToy and watch yourself on the screen while you belt out the tunes! I've never done this (I don't own an EyeToy), but it looks like it would be pretty neat!
And if you're in Australian, Germany, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Spain or the United States, you get some unique songs to some of the games! So for example, Singstar Pop for Australia has a bunch of Australian artists like Delta Goodrem, Missy Higgins, Savage Garden along with the other artists found on all versions.
It really is one of those games that you won't get tired of... as long as you have enough of the games! Because singing the same songs over and over (even though there's about 25 on each disc plus a few medleys) does get a bit boring. But practise does make perfect, and the goal of the game is to get the highest score possible (Singstar!). But it is a lot of fun, and if you're sick of having to work hard at a game and want something easy and relaxing, then I highly recommend Singstar!

NEXT TIME ON GAMER'S LOG...
Every gamer has that one game they always know they can play when they tire of everything else. That one game that is more than just a favourite. It's the game that, even though you've played a million times over and have beat every level and could probably play the entire thing blindfolded, you know it'll still be as fun as it was when you first played it. So, tell us about that game for you! Maybe you're still loyal to the first Gran Turismo game, or maybe it's one of the more recent games in the Tekken series. Or perhaps it's something a bit deeper like Gears Of War. But it doesn't matter what it is, because it's time to spill and tell us all about it!
Hi! I'm Sherissa. :) I'm 20 years old, and I've been in a steady relationship for over three years. I'm currently attending college in Wisconsin in hopes of someday becoming a school guidance counselor or working in a reduced-cost clinic. I love video games, music, art, movies, books, volunteering, and working on computers. I would eat crab rangoon and drink Diet Coke for the rest of my life if I could!
Christie's comment: Hello gamers! Sherissa is taking a short break, so I'm taking the helm again. Instead of all those quiz games that are so much fun, I thought I'd bring you up to date with a little game called Singstar! I'm a recent convert, so hopefully by the time you've finished on this page, you will be too, lol. Happy gaming!
