Slim-fast, Good or Bad?

Hi! Just wanted to know if it was okay to drink Slim-fast everyday and eat very little. I read the nutrition facts on the label and it looks really healthy. You don't HAVE to be on a diet or trying to lose weight to drink Slim-fast, right? Thanks! sum1, 17 from United States

Anne's comment: Slim-fast and others of the same variety are very high in vitamins and proteins - but only when paired off with 2% milk, as read on the label anything less will not provide the needed nutrients to your body. These drinks can be used as a meal replacement, so maybe trade out an unhealthy lunch for Slim-fast. But your body will still need you to eat properly and that means a healthy and balanced breakfast, lunch and dinner (aside from whatever meal you decide to replace) the other two must be full of nutrients.

What are Stitches?

Hiya! I need some help! I go to the gym everyday (except on Saturdays) and I mostly run/jog/walk for about an hour. And I get stitches on my side. I stretch before and after my run. Why do I get stitches? And how do I make them go away so I can continue exercising? Also, I've noticed that as the days go by, I'm getting muscle in my legs (below my knees) and there is no effect whatsoever on my thighs, I don't want that. I just want slimmer legs so I can wear shorts/miniskirts and look hot. Am I doing the right exercise?

BTW, great page! I love it! help moi please, 15

Anne's comment: I think any girl wants to look great in shorts and skirts, especially with summer around the corner. Unfortunately, the upper thigh is very fatty and results will show slower then on the lower half of your legs. Stitches or muscle cramping is caused by a lack of oxygen to the muscles, although you are doing your muscles good while stretching ensure you are breathing properly through-out your work out (It may seem weird but most people forget to breathe in through their nose and out through their mouth regularly when exercising) this will help your muscles avoid that pain. There is a simple move you can also do to continue your work-out but also help your stitches; put your hands behind your head with your elbows raised (similar to when you do a sit-up) remember to breathe properly and in no time your stitches will be gone.

Toning your Trouble Areas

What easy exercises can you do to tone your thighs? I went to the mall to fit these short shorts and I realized my thighs are really fat! I was disgusted with myself...
I also would like to know what easy exercises can you do to help lose weight in the stomach area? Thanks a ton! abc123, 17 from Canada

Anne's comment: Both your thighs and stomach are two very difficult places to tone with quick results, but continue your work out and in no-time you will be very happy with your efforts. For your thighs try squats or a wall-sit, these moves are both similar to taking a seat on a chair but without the chair. With a squat you are repeating the movement of standing and going to "sit" on a chair (without the chair). With the wall-sit you are holding your back against the wall with your knees bent at a 90 degree angle but instead of repeating the movement your holding the position for a length of time. Both of these simple exercises are great on your thighs.

As for toning your tummy, there is another very simple exercise: sit-ups or crunches. Here you lay flat on your back with your knees raised and your feet planted on the ground, as you become more comfortable you can try different alterations to up the intensity. For now, we'll keep it simple and with your hands behind your head supporting your neck begin to pull your shoulders towards your knees. Keep your abdominals tight and I know this can be difficult, try and imagine there is a string attached to your belly-button and you are pulling that string into the ground beneath you.

Finding Motivation

For anyone who wants help finding motivation... one thing that has really helped me was finding a community on Live Journal that was totally dedicated to my favorite kind of exercise. (Running!) People post in the community every day with news of their recent races, training goals, questions, and links to interesting articles! It may take some work to find the right community for you, but it's worth it. The people in Runners (that's the name of the community, if you want to look it up!) are so kind and helpful, and always give great advice. So look into finding a group like this for you! (Or this group exactly, if you like running, hahaha!) Kaitlin, 23 from Michigan, USA
